I am now working with the new Medium Format Digital camera system the Fuji GFX 100 &  50r.

This new system blends seamlessly with my medium format FILM systems to the point that the only real difference for me is the loss of my darkroom work when using it!

I am finding that the images from the GFX are pretty much equal  with my  6x4.5 film systems and much easier to travel with!

Currently I am using the following lenses:

Fujinon GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR Lens
Fujinon GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens
GF 250mm f/4 R LM OIS WR Lens
Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Black Nokton II ASPH Leica M Lens
Voigtlander Ultra Wide-Heliar 12mm f/5.6 Aspherical M Mount Lens for Leica M

I went over to the island today at 1pm to shoot the Pier in the patchwork sky. It was amazing with the bright white patches of light moving over the surface of the water!

This was a Fuji GFX 100 with the 32-64mm GF lens and 10 stops of ND for a 30 second exposure. The wind was so strong that any exposure longer than 30 seconds induced movement in the pier from the tripod shaking!  Had I brought my stool I would have lowered the tripod for more stability!

Lessons learned....

This is Daddy's Girls in Bluffton, SC. It is the only shrimp boat that I have found in the town, but it is a great one and scene. This was taken Saturday morning last week using a Fuji GFX 50R medium format digital camera system.I love shrimp boats and always try to incorporate them into travel and workshops. What more could you ask for in a scene? Wabi-sabi, moody sky, great reflections of a failing lively hood that is soon to be a thing of the past due to farm raised imported shrimp. To say that I am inspired to capture these scenes is too weak of a term. The fact is that I am DRIVEN to do so. Oh well, we all have our weaknesses and issues.....

Today spent the morning prior to returning home at the Nags Head Pier for some really long work. The waves where HUGE!

Here is one that I did there demonstrating exposures near the 10 min mark! The fog really made it a great location for everyone!

This was with the Breakthrough X4 14 stop magnetic nd filter on a Fuji GFX 50R medium format digital.

Foggy today here in Pawleys Island at the pier. Could not resist going forth to create! 50R with the Fujinon GF32-64mm F4 R LM WR set to 62mm with 13 stops of ND (Breakthrough X4 3 stop magnetic and 10 stop square) . This was enough for a 8 min exposure. I have a 6 stop X4 magnetic arriving on Wednesday! :)

I love doing this style of photography! I bring a small stool and plop down on the beach for hours on end. It is both peaceful and inspiring and I take great joy from the process!

I had to go to Myrtle Beach today for my Grandsons Basketball game and when finished I thought that I would drive over to the Springmaid Pier which had been destroyed by a recent hurricane. They have said that it was to be torn down and replaced by some concrete version and I was desperate to record it prior to that happening. Like all things that draw me ( Grist Mills, Shrimpers and covered bridges) Piers have a limited life and I am driven to document them while they still exist, especially ones damaged...

There is some strange drive within me that drives me to this, inspires me to keep returning again and again. Today I pledged to myself that I will make a lot more trips here and hopefully capture its essence...

On Friday we ventured out with Ellen, Meg, Baby Lilly and me. I followed Lilly around for a bit with the camera then moved over to the groin and beach houses to play. Here is one result .

Today at the Pawleys Island Marsh on the North causeway.

This is a 60s exposure to soften the ripples and hopefully get some cloud tearing but alas that was not in the cards at only 60 seconds! It was much too cold to stand out there for any more time!

This is the Fuji GFX 50R medium format digital camera system with the 120mm macro and 10 stops of ND. I chose the 6x12 format to keep the subject and image proportions at a more pleasing aspect.

Meet Charlee Marie, a wonderful shrimp boat in Mc Clellanville, SC that I visited today. Plain blue sky, no clouds but yet there was something about the scene that kept calling to me. A composition of the entire boat was impossible due the many boats being crowded very closely together. This was with the Fuji GFX 50R and Fujinon GF32-64mm F4 R LM WR lens with a polarizer using the internal Acros/red simulation. The light was coming down at an angle and seems as though a single bright beam striking the wheel house and creating an especially moody scene. Day Tripper, McClellanville, SC on a plain bright blue sky day. Taken with the Fuji GFX 50R using the internal Acros/red film profile for a wonderful B&W image.

God's Grace and friends... A cluttered mess filed with beauty in its dis-organisation. The use of the internal B&W Acros/red simulation works as well as using an actual filter on my Acros film but with the benefit of outputting the B&W as a true RAW image!

Yesterday with the 50R and Fujinon GF32-64mm F4 R LM WR and polarizer.

After lunch in Port Royal, SC today I noticed a little connected dock to the right of the restaurant that was holding 2 shrimpers. The sky was great and the water smooth. Back to the truck for the GFX 50r and the 120mm macro. Using the Acros/r raw film simulation I setup for a few shots of the scene. This was my favorite.

Shrimp boats speak to me. They are fading away from us due to foreign farm raised shrimp and not to far in our future we will no longer see them. I am inspired to capture and record them every where I travel. Some image I like, others not so much.

But THIS ONE.... speaks!

I love the fact that you can set the camera to RAW only output and any film simulation is tagged in the EXIF data for C1 v12 to use in the raw conversion. This is a very powerful tool!

Today while down in Hilton Head i drove up to the small town of Port Royal to see what shrimpers were in port. OMG, there were a ton of them and a nice cloudy sky!

This is shooting down the walk to the docks and several boats on the end. Used GFX 50r and the 32-64 mm zoom with the raw internal Acros/red simulation. I love the fact that it still generates a raw file and you have the ability to turn on and off any of the internal simulations within C1 v12 pro.

She's Gone...

Beaufort, SC and one of the lost... THIS is why I travel out of my way to visit and document these amazing boats. Even in her demise she still provides a powerful and moody image.

The decay and eventual loss of these amazing boats inspires me to get out and document them again and again. Wherever I travel I always strive to visit the local fleets. I admit, it is a addiction and there is no way for me to fight it.

Approaching storm over the Pawleys Island marsh.

Fuji GFX 50r with the GF120mm macro lens (1st shot). I used the internal Acros/red film simulation. I was stunned by the mood and clarity of the image. The most amazing thing about the scene is the inspiring mood and depth. I stood there in amazement looking prior to shooting. BUT... the after results simply blow me away!

Good foggy morning! This is on the Pawleys Island, SC North Causeway looking north... You really have to love the fog when photographing scenes like this in B&W!I love the simple composition with minimal structure

Daddy's Girls with the Fuji GFX 50R medium format digital and the Fuji G 32-64mm lens. I was testing the in camera Acros with red filter today.Everytime I visit this scene I am amazed to the point of inspiration driving me back again and again. I KNOW that the next time there I will get a better image! There is no escaping this....

I really like the fact that the monochrome curve and data is in the raw data of the file and can be turned on and off in C1v4 for either B&W or color and not require JPG output!
